10 EXAMPLES OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

  1. Therapist helps a person with mental disorder in coping or treating his behaviors, feelings and thoughts. Physical therapist however are those who are experts in movements and teach people the right movement and muscles to press for a soothing feeling about some uneasiness and minor pain in the body.  
  2. Dentist is someone who is also called as dental surgeon because he specializes in treating and taking care of one’s teeth and gums.  
  3. Pharmacist is someone who has extensive knowledge of chemistry and anatomy/physiology. He gives the prescriptions of the medicines to patients. In most cases, because nurses provide this service in the hospitals, pharmacists are somehow found in pharmacies so they explain the use of the medicines acquired by customers. Some customers buy over the counter drugs without prescriptions and the pharmacist will suggest what medicine a patient may take just by the common symptoms the customer tells. This is why even if the doctor’s penmanship is not legible to read, the pharmacy is able to give correct medicine because of the pharmacist.
  4. A nurse is a health care professional that help doctors in diagnosing patients who are sick and injured. They also help them in taking care of the patients to promote and maintain their health. They work under the supervision of a doctor or a physician.
  5. Physician is someone who is trained to provide health care. He can be a doctor yet, some doctors are not physicians.  His field is general so he may treat any illness or injuries but if it is serious, he will refer the patient to a doctor or specialist.
  6. Doctor is a kind of physician who undergo or study a higher degree specifically doctoral degree. This is why some teachers are also called doctors when they get their doctoral degree. Usually, they will hold a specific field like being a surgeon, an internist or an obgyne.
  7. Midwife is another trained health professional whose task is to take care of a pregnant woman who is about to give birth. Like a nurse, she assists a doctor specialized in OBgyne that is in charge in helping an expectant mother to give birth. If there is no Obgyne, the midwife will assist the mother in delivering a baby because she is also trained to do such thing. In public hospitals or lying ins where no OBgynes are available, the midwife  takes care of the pregnant woman and helps her in delivering the baby and  she also takes care of the baby until they are released for home.
  8. A home health aide takes care of a patient upon the latter’s request. The patients are usually those who are disabled or an elderly who does not want to be taken care in a Home for the Aged places. The home health aide helps the patient in taking care of himself/herself like bathing, changing clothes and even some household chores. He can be full time in one patient or serve several patients in a day by hopping house to house if not full time depending on his contract with his patient/s.  
  9. A diagnostic medical sonographer or DMS is a person operates imaging machines  like ultrasound, sonogram and any similar device in a hospital or a clinic. However, he is not licensed to read or assess the results.
  10. Speech-language pathologists are health professional specialized in communication disorders. They diagnose and treat those children whose communication ability is behind the normal milestone of a child.

WHAT ARE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS?

Health professionals are people who are licensed to take care of the people pertaining to their health. They may have different roles and responsibilities in regards to how to take care of us but they all deserve our respect and salute in doing their jobs as expected.
